Golf Like a Girl: How cute outfits turned into athletic obsession.

Golf like a girl

How cute outfits turned into an obsession.

FORE!!!

If that’s what I really shouted during a round, maybe I would get more invites to play with women- IKYKY. If you run your mouth just as much as me, welcome to the motherfuc*ing party.

I’m not your amateur golfer- I’m your AVERAGE golfer. I don’t suck, but I’m not that good…

I like to drink a few with friends, and I’m way too competitive with myself.

I basically live in athleisure, and any chance to make a sport look cute, I’m in.

Nothing against country clubs or country club folks, but I don’t always want to wear a collar, and a $20 twilight round sounds perfect to me.

Does this sound like you? You’ve come to the right place my friend.

Today I’m going to tell you how this softball queen learned to love golf.

Since I was young I was always ‘one of the boys’. I played travel softball through college despite turning down some opportunities to play on a collegiate level. No offense, but Rochester, NY has snow from Dec 1-May 1st.

This didn’t stop at RIT- where the boy to girl ratio my freshman year was 7:1 -You read that right. Be it rock-climbing or cycling, there was always a sport to be involved in since tailgating just wasn’t our thing (RIT football: undefeated since 1978).

Post-Grad: Life after sports

Nobody warns you about the inevitable shitstorm you will encounter going from having a thousand friends and activities at your disposal, to making new friends at a new job and trying to figure out how to balance your health and fitness.

Aside from company softball leagues, there were of course supplier and charity golf tournaments…and I wasn’t going to miss out on the fun. If it’s a sport, I’ll try it

Athleticism can only get you so far in golf. My softball background made it easy to connect with the ball, but I didn’t know anything about swinging correctly, golf etiquette, scoring, etc. The cost, intimidation factor and this high-society vibe keeps too many women off the course and I want to change that. I was lucky enough to have a family friend who gave me some simple lessons in the backyard and an old junior set with all the clubs I needed (I’ve only just upgraded them 13 years later).

After winning the longest drive at some charity tournaments over the years, people encouraged me that I had potential for the game -I was not convinced. I only played about twice a year in a less-intimidating scramble format. But never a full 18 holes.

Despite the encouragement however, I couldn't hit an iron to save my life...and I didn’t have enough focus or patience to take lessons during a time in my early 30s when I was making a career shift to a full-time fitness professional.

If I’m not good at something, I’m too competitive to embarrass myself in front of other people. If you’re not first, you’re last...right? Only it’s not that predictable in golf...but I wouldn’t learn that valuable lesson until 2021.

So I gave up. That’s it. My golf bag collected dust for almost 4 years before I picked it up again in West Texas. Keep scrolling if you want to see how I started despite all my hesitations.

Once an athlete, always an athlete

After a couple of years teaching 40-50 classes/month + TCF Online, and trying to keep my own body in shape... I was totally burnt out without any energy left for myself. And quite frankly - my body hurt like hell. I thought 32 was too young for that, and my brand will always encourage a ‘life-term’ mindset which meant I needed a change.

I wanted to enjoy a work-life balance again.

My mission at TCF is to encourage people that you don’t have to spend all your time in the gym to live an enjoyable and active lifestyle. For me, this meant moving to working for myself full time so I wasn’t spending all my time at a fitness studio or working out. This gave me the opportunity to rest my body a bit. Really all it took was some of my girlfriends telling me to buy some cute athleisure and go out for a round with my husband. So I finally decided to pick up my old clubs again. If I could learn to play with this mixed bag of skittles & M&Ms as I like to refer to my sweet bag… I decided - I could play and enjoy it.

I’ve always considered myself an athlete, but as an adult, there’s only so many fitness classes than can really make you feel ‘competitive’ again.

It turns out that all that time off was the best thing for me. I decided to practice a lot this time, and calm the F down on the course because this game is literally the hardest sport you will ever play. (unfortunately, I don’t play better when I’m drinking, but that doesn’t keep me away from the High Noons).

What started as my girlfriend telling me ‘think of all the fun outfits you can wear!’ turned out to be a total athletic obsession.

After just a few weeks, I was playing 3-4 days a week when I wasn’t training clients or working on TCF Online.

Golf is arguably one of the hardest sports to pick up as an adult….

But there’s no reason more women can’t meet on the tee box, without feeling like dog sh%* - play with me and my girls are you’ll probably hear that quite a bit. We laugh at more shots than we celebrate.

We’ve mastered the art of not giving a f*&% and being able to keep up with the boys when necessary.
